22 November 2008 Lightning Ridge

An original camp site

Under Ground
Noodling for Opal

It was COLD!! (snowing in some places such as Orange)

Up early for some coffee before our tour. Was picked up from the caravan park and shown around the town and the mining area. Got to have a chance to look for opals ourselves – managed to find some shards which we could keep – this is called Noodling and they encourage the visitors to do it. Dropped off in time for lunch and caught up with Sally and Col – they had had a big day with driving the day before so were taking it easy this morning. They went off for a drive around and came back to get up so that we could have a look at the Chambers of the Black Hand – an old mine that the owner had started doing carvings in. Before that took them to some of the places that we went on the tour including the noodling place and got to do a bit more – can see why people do this often as it can be so addictive. Back to camp and then walked over to the visitors centre – they have a pile of leftovers from the mines that people can come and noodle at – as I said very addictive. Earlyish night once again it was so cold – clear skies but very cold, decided to move on tomorrow
