17 November 2008 Crows Nest National Park to Yelarbon

Our camp site at Crows Nest
The bleak weather

This is Rudds Pub

Up early – still drizzling, decided to look at the BOM website (had battery power left in the PC) – it appears that the storm we had last night was the worst in the area for 20 years, 200,000 houses were without power, the storm had cyclonic winds and trees were blown over, houses had lost their roofs and there was general destruction. The BOM site also said that there was more weather on the way. Decided that Fraser Island wouldn’t be a goer this trip and that it might be worth our while to travel inland. Decided to travel to Warwick to see what was happening, stopped at the butchers at Highfield and bought some Chilli Bratwursts and batteries for the radio seeing that Woolies is now open. Travelled through Warwick and then decided to try for Goondiwindi. Fell short by about 40kms and stayed at a small place called Yelarbon – Lovely place – was an old railway carriage that the locals had relocated and set up as a community camping place. Had a wonderful hot shower, but the rain was relentless. Had a phone call from Jan’s mum to let her know about her Aunty and Uncle living in Toowoomba – too late as we were too far away – will make sure that we catch up the next trip. Mike cooked comfort food (sausages and mash) that we bought from Highfield butchers in Toowoomba – yum wished we had more. Early night as it was really cold and wet.
